Why recycle your food waste?
Recycling your food waste
Recycling your food waste is a great way to help reduce your carbon emissions and make the most of any food waste that cannot be composted (or eaten). 🥕
What's the difference between Anaerobic digestion and energy from waste - don't they both turn my food waste into energy?
👉Correct - non-recyclable waste is sent to Javelin Park energy from waste facility. However, food waste is composed of about 70% water, requiring considerably more energy to burn it, making this a less efficient method of disposal than recycling. It also means that digestate (bio-fertiliser) is not produced as a biproduct, like it is at Andigestion. Bio-fertiliser is spread to land as a replacement for mineral fertilisers.🚜 Its use ensures that vital nutrients in the food waste are recycled and returned to the ground.
Did you know?
- More and more people are recycling their food waste. If we all stopped wasting the food which could have been eaten, it would have the same CO2 impact as taking 1 in 4 cars off UK roads. 🚗👣
- Nine recycled banana peels could generate enough energy to fully charge a laptop 💻
- A caddy load of food waste could generate enough electricity to power a home for almost an hour, or a guitar amp for almost 2½ hours? 💡
When you put it like that, why wouldn’t you recycle your unwanted food waste!
Even better than recycling your food waste is to reduce the amount you create, this will reduce your carbon footprint and save you money! Check out the love food hate waste website for loads of hints, tip, recipes and ideas to reduce your food waste. 🍎🌍
