Choose your compost bin 

There are lots of different styles of composting, from traditional cold composting to hot composting. Choosing the right bin for you depends on what materials you want to compost and what space you have. Check out our section on different types of composting to see what is best for you.

Place your bin in your garden

You want to place it in a position that is: 
- in a sunny or semi-shaded position
- directly on the soil or turf
- away from water-courses

Start filling your bin

Build up a mix of 'green' and 'brown' materials. Green material includes grass cuttings, veg peelings and weeds. Brown materials include sticks & twigs, cardboard and hay. Find out more about green and brown materials. We also have some information about what you can compost.
